We chose Occidental Dresden Newa, due to the following reasons:
- Excellent location – minutes away from Dresden train station and walking distance to Dresdenโs historic Old Town
- Good reviews on TripAdvisor
- Good value for money hotel in Dresden
Overall, we had a great experience and trully loved the proximity to the train station as we travelled from Cologne and then left to Budapest from the same train station.
The hotel was clean, the bed was comfortable, the view from the room was great, breakfast was excellent and overall we enjoyed our stay.
We share more about our experience below.
How to Get To Hotel Occidental Dresden Newa
The hotel is a few minutes walk from Dresden Train Station, which was the main reason why we booked it. It is located on Prager Strasse Shopping Street with lots of shops and restaurants nearby.
If you are travelling by train, this is an excellent location but also there are plenty of tram and bus options near the hotel to take you around Dresden.
From the hotel, Dresdenโs historic Old Town and Frauenkirche Church are less than 10 minutes walk away. The tram stop opposite the hotel provides connections to all parts of the city.

Check-in Experience
We arrived late at night to the hotel. The check in process was OK but the night receptionist was a bit bored andย unprofessional, to be honest.
He explained everything we needed to know about the hotel and provided some information about the breakfast service and the facilities that the hotel offers. We still had to check the next day the situation with the spa and if this was included or paid extra.
We were very tired as we had travelled for a few hours from Cologne and quickly made our way to the room.
Lobby
The lobby of the hotel is actually quite nice, bright and spacious. You have plenty of seating areas to choose from.
There is a lobby bar as well where you can grab a drink. We were too busy exploring Dresden, so didn’t really spend much time here.
Hotel Room
We booked a Superior Double Room for two nights as part of our Interrail trip.
Our room was a good size and the bed was comfortable and offered a good night sleep. We really enjoyed the table and chairs by the window as the view from the room was really nice.
The room was stylish and tastefully furnished and perhaps a bit minimalistic. The mirror opposite the bed created an illusion of a larger room than it was.
On each side of the bed there were bedside tables. A small desk (what we used as charging station), table and chairs and a flat screen TV were also available.
As you enter the room, you have a decent wardrobe space for clothes and luggage. The safe was also in this area and I was surprised to see a steamer in the room too.
Perhaps a bit unusual but tea and coffee making facilities were not availalbe. Instead we did have a bottle of sparkling water.
The most surprising thing for us was the layout of the room and how there was just a curtain (no wall), so you can technically have a shower whilst enjoying the view from the room.
Bathroom
The bathroom was a decent size, not small but not large either. It was clean and with a walk in shower, large mirror, vanity mirror and towels.
Shampoo, body wash and soap were available from a dispenser. No other toiletries were provided.
The bathroom was separated from the toilet by a sliding door. At least the toilet door was made of frosted glass, so you couldn’t really see through from the room.
Here is a view from the bathroom towards the room if the curtain is not closed. For me it felt a bit awkward but it depends what you fancy, I suppose.

Breakfast at Hotel Occidental Dresden Newa
The breakfast at the hotel was a real highlight! This is exactly the type of breakfast we would expect in 4-star hotels.
The service was excellent, the food was fresh, tasty and appealing. Despite being busy, it didn’t feel overcrowded in the mornings.
The hot food section was good, bacon was cooked perfectly and you could choose of a range or egg options. Paul of course had an ommellette cooked to his liking.
The cold section was good with a nice variety of cold cut meats and very good cheese selection.
I was very happy to see the smoked salmon as I love smoked salmon for breakfast. I usually have this with soft cheese and cucumbers.
Muesli and cereals were offered as standard and it was good to see different seeds and toppings for your breakfast.
The fruits and yoghurts section was varied and beautifully presented. It felt that you have a decent choice, even if you are fussy.
There was a selection of breads, pastries and desserts which we enjoyed. I loved the huge jar of Nutella and the honeycomb on offer.
In terms of drinks, a few coffee machines were available with freshly ground coffee and a selection of espresso, americano, cappuccino, latte etc. The coffee was actually very good and we liked the option to take away coffee as we finished breakfast and continued with our day.
Water and a selection of juices to choose from were also available. It’s worth noting that the juices weren’t fresh but from concentrate.
The tea selection was excellent, perhaps one of the best I have seen in an European hotel. I tried the camomile tea and the fruity tea and they were really good.
It was good to see a robot assisting the staff with the workload and carrying plates around the restaurant. It reminded us of the hotels in Japan and China.
