Why We Chose Hotel Mercure Brussels Centre Midi

In terms of accommodation, we would recommend booking your accommodation through an aggregator such as Booking.com or Trip.com to get the best rates. We booked this hotel via Booking.com so we can reach the next Genius level.

We chose Hotel Mercure Brussels Centre Midi, due to the following reasons:

  • Excellent location – we were looking for hotels near Brussels Midi train station
  • Good reviews on TripAdvisor about Brussels train station hotel
  • It came across as a good value for money hotel

Overall, we had a good experience and liked the proximity to the train station as we travelled from Heidelberg to Brussels, we did a day trip to Bruges and then from the same train station made our return journey to London.

The hotel was clean, the bed was comfortable, the room was super spacious (seems like we got a room for disabled people), breakfast was great. We found the staff members to be polite and friendly.

We share more about our experience below.

How to Get To Hotel Mercure Brussels Centre Midi

The hotel is a short walk away from Brussels Midi train station, which is the main reason why we chose it. At the time of our visit, there were construction works near the hotel and we had to walk a bit more to reach the hotel.

If you are travelling by train, this is an excellent location. The train station offers Eurostar connections to international destinations such as London and Paris, as well as direct access to other Belgian cities, such as Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp.

If you are flying to Brussels, we can get a connection to Brussels Midi train station and within 10 minutes walk, you can be in the hotel.

The hotel is surrounded by both bus and tram stations. The city centre is within walking distance, if you plan to explore Brussels.

Check-in Experience

We had a smooth check in experience which was great as we were very tired. We arrived late at night after a full day exploring Heidelberg and travelling from Heidelberg to Brussels.

The receptionist who was also the bar tender, welcomed us to the hotel and quickly processed our information. He explained everything we needed to know about the hotel and provided more information about the breakfast service and the facilities that the hotel offers.

We enjoyed some time in the outside area by reception before retiring to our room for a good night sleep.

Lobby

The lobby of the hotel is actually quite nice, bright and spacious. You have plenty of seating areas to choose from.

The hotel is very much environmentally friendly and the good thing about this is the water machine in the lobby, encrouraging you to refill your own water bottle (or buy a reusable one from the hotel).

You also have a bar from where you can grab drinks or some light food.

One area we particularly enjoyed was the outside space which is accessible from the breakfast restaurant or from the lobby.

Hotel Room

We booked a Superior Double Room for one night as part of our Interrail trip.

Our room was spacious and the bed was comfortable and offered a good night sleep. The painting of a train above the bed was very appropriate given our Interrail trip journey and the proximity of the hotel to the train station.

On each side of the bed there were bedside tables. A small desk, a table and a chair and a flat screen TV were also available.

I didn’t think in this big room there was enough space to put your clothes, so a wardrobe would have been a nice addition. There was a large mirror by the entrance, which was nice.

Tea and coffee making facilities were also available, although we didn’t take advantage of these.

This modern room is perfect for a city break or a business trip to Brussels and we were happy with our choice.

Bathroom

The bathroom was very spacious too. For some reason it appeared that we were given a room for disabled people but if this means more space, we abdolutely don’t mind it.

It was clean and with a walk in shower, mirror, vanity mirror and towels. Shampoo, body wash and soap were available from a dispenser. There was a hair dryer too.

No other toiletries were provided but in the bathroom there was a note to say that a number of things are available upon request e.g. dental kit, vanity kit, shaving kit, sewing kit, comb etc.

Spa and Fitness Centre

Spa and fitness centre are also available in the hotel but we didn’t get the chance to visit them. We were hoping to go to the spa, but by the time we arrived at the hotel, the spa centre had closed.

In this regard, our stay at Pullman Brussels Centre Midi was better as the sauna was opened 24/7.

Breakfast at Hotel Mercure Brussels Centre Midi

The breakfast at the hotel was good, however we expected more from a 4 start hotel at the price we paid.

We had a good breakfast (better than the other Brussels hotel) but felt hot food variety could have been better. Scrambled eggs, bacon and other hot foods were available but nothing special. As it was Easter Monday, there were a few Easter specials and nice decorations, which was a nice touch.

The selection of cold meats and cheese was actually very good, we enjoyed it.

Waffles, crepes and other sweet treats were available as well as a good selection of breads items.

Muesli, cereals were offered and I really liked the section with different types of seeds and dry food toppings. Fresh fruits were also available.

The restaurant was spaciour and there were plenty of tables to choose from.

In terms of drinks, there was a selection of juices and different types of dairy and non-dairy milks to choose from.

We loved the freshly squeezed orange juice, this perhaps was a highlight from the breakfast.

There was a nice tea and coffee selection too. The coffee was actually very good and we could choose between coffee pods or the coffee machine with freshly ground coffee.

One thing we didn’t like so much was the lack of take away cups (due to the environment commitment) which meant that we couldn’t take coffees on the go before our day trip to Bruges.

Final Thoughts

If you are wondering which hotel to stay in, Hotel Mercure Brussels Centre Midi might be a good place to book for your business or leisure accommodation in Brussels. This is a very good hotel near Brussels-Midi/Zuid train station.

All in all, we enjoyed the hotel, amenities and the facilities and we would stay here again. For travellers like us, the room was a very good size, modern and contemporary. The easy access to Brussels Midi train station made it easy to travel to and from Brussels.

The hotel is conveniently located near good transport links which made it easy for us to travel around Belgium and internationally.
