Overview

For a few years now I really wanted to visit this salt time but time never allowed. We finally did a day trip from Bucharest to Salina (salt mine) Slanic and we were impressed!
What makes Slănic salt mine in Romania truly special is its natural health benefits—the underground air is rich in salt particles, known for improving respiratory conditions such as asthma and allergies.
Many visitors come not only for sightseeing but also for the therapeutic effects of spending time in this pristine, cool environment.

Our main purpose was sightseeing but we made sure to stay underground for at least 4 hours to take in the health benefits as well. We have previously been to Turda salt mine but wanted to visit this one as well due to its proximity to Bucharest.
Besides its health benefits, the mine is an impressive engineering feat, with underground galleries reaching up to 70 meters high, creating a cathedral-like space filled with fascinating sculptures and sports areas. The constant temperature of around 12°C makes it a refreshing escape, especially during hot summers.
How to get to Slănic Salt Mine

Slănic Salt Mine is located about 100 km north of Bucharest, in Prahova County. Depending on your preferred mode of transport, you can reach the mine by car, train, bus, or an organised tour. Here’s a breakdown of each option:
- By train – Trains leave from Bucharest Nord Train Station and the journey takes 2 – 2.5 hours. You will need to go from Bucharest Nord to Ploiești Sud and then transfer to a local train to Slănic. The train is on the same platform which makes the connection easy and smooth. This option is good for budget-conscious travellers.
- By car – Driving time: is approximately 1.5 – 2 hours (depending on traffic). The road condition is generally good, though there may be occasional potholes on smaller roads. Parking is available near the entrance to the Slanic salt mine. Going by car is good for flexibility and speed.
- By organised tour – If you prefer a stress-free experience, you can book a guided tour from Bucharest, which often includes transportation, entry tickets, and a guide. Here is an example of Slanic Salt Mine Day Tour from Bucharest. This is great for hassle-free travel and convenience.
You know us, we love trains, so of couse we chose the train option.
We got the 7:15am train from Bucharest and by 9:30am we were already at Slanic. The train station is really close to the entrance of the salt mine which made it convenient and straightforward to visit the salt mine.
We did stop for a coffee break though.
Slănic Prahova Salt Mine Opening Times
If you’re planning a day trip from Bucharest to Slănic Salt Mine, it’s important to time your visit carefully — as access to the underground galleries is only possible via scheduled shuttle transport.
At the time of writing (as of January 2026 schedule):
- Monday – Tuesday: Closed
- Wednesday – Sunday: Open
Underground Transport Schedule:
- 09:15 – First transport into the mine
- 15:30 – Last transport into the mine
- 16:30 – Last transport back to the surface
This means that if you arrive after 15:30, you may not be allowed entry underground — even if the site itself is still open. You can read more about the schedule on the official website.
We recommend arriving before midday, especially on weekends, as queues for the shuttle buses can build up quickly. Since your visit begins with this transport down into the mine, delays here can eat into your underground exploration time.

What to Do at Slănic Salt Mine
The journey starts from the time you buy your ticket. You are taken on a shuttle bus from the ticket office to the main entrance of the salt mine.
1. Marvel at the Immense Underground Caverns

If this is your first time in the salt mine, you will be really impressed at the immense caverns!
The mine is one of the largest salt mines in Europe, with massive chambers reaching over 70 meters in height. The vast underground space creates a cathedral-like atmosphere, with smooth, swirling salt walls that look almost artistic.

The temperature remains a constant 12°C (54°F) year-round, so it’s a refreshing escape from summer heat. Depending on when you are visiting the mine, make sure you have the appropriate clothing.
2. Breathe in the Health-Boosting Air

The air inside the mine is rich in salt particles, known for its therapeutic effects on respiratory conditions like asthma and allergies.
Many people spend time here to improve their breathing, as the mine is often used for halotherapy (salt therapy).
There are designated relaxation areas where you can sit (or lie down) and enjoy the pure air. We actually really liked it here and stood at least half an hour chilling and breathing in the health-boosting air.
3. See the Underground Salt Sculptures & Carvings

Throughout the mine, you’ll find impressive sculptures and carvings made entirely of salt, depicting historical figures and religious icons.
The way light reflects off the salt walls gives these carvings a magical appearance. Don’t forget to snap a few photos 🙂
4. Play and Explore the Sports & Recreation Areas

The mine features a mini football golf, air hockey, table tennis, pool tables and a children’s play area, making it a fun visit for families. The playground for children includes trampolines, inflatable slides and even a karting track.
There are also benches and open spaces where you can relax and enjoy the silence of the underground world.
5. Learn about the History of the Mine

Slănic Salt Mine has been operational since 1685, and though mining stopped in the 1970s, it remains a scientific and tourist attraction.
Inside, you’ll find informational panels explaining how the mine was created and its geological significance. You can also learn about how salt mining played a key role in Romania’s economy over the centuries.
At the main entrance there is lots of information about the mine and you get to see some exhibitions throughout the mine.
6. Experience the Largest Planetarium in Romania

One of the newest and most exciting attractions inside Slănic Salt Mine is its state-of-the-art planetarium, which is considered the largest and most modern in Romania.
There a number of projections that cover topics like black holes, star formation, and the solar system. At the time we were there, the next projection was about Apollo, so without any hesitation we got our tickets and enjoyed the projection.

Watching a space show 200 meters underground inside a giant salt cavern was a surreal experience.
7. Have a Coffee Break

After exploring the underground wonders of the Slănic Salt Mine, you’ll likely want a moment to relax and recharge.
Sit down for a cosy coffee break (next to the souvenir shop) whilst admiring the salt mine. We had a coffee and a dessert to give us some more energy for the rest of the day.
8. Shop at the Souvenir Shop

Before concluding your visit, make sure to stop by the souvenir shop located within the Slănic Salt Mine.
This store offers a variety of salt-related products that serve as perfect mementos or gifts. Among the items available are medicinal salts known for their therapeutic properties, bath salts, salt-based spices, and other unique salt-based products.
Alternatively, you can buy salt products outside of the mine at the little market.
