Bruges, known as the “Venice of the North,” offers enchanting canals, striking medieval architecture, and a captivating historical atmosphere.

Our day trip from Brussels was filled with delightful experiences, from gliding along picturesque canals on a guided boat tour to soaking in the romantic views at Rosary Quay. We also explored hidden gems like the vibrant Basilica of the Holy Blood and the impressive Gothic Hall at Bruges City Hall.

Ending the day with authentic Belgian fries and delectable waffles ensured our brief visit was both memorable and satisfying. Bruges is undeniably a perfect day-trip destination on any European adventure.

Bruges, often referred to as the “Venice of the North,” is renowned for its enchanting canals, medieval architecture, and delightful atmosphere. Historically, Bruges thrived during the medieval period as a prominent centre of European trade, especially noted for its flourishing wool industry and as a trading hub within the Hanseatic League.

Its well-preserved medieval buildings, squares, and canals reflect this prosperous era. As part of our 2025 Interrail itinerary, we took a relaxing day trip to Bruges from Brussels, enjoying both the charm and rich historical heritage of this picturesque Belgian city.

Travel to and Around Bruges

We opted for a convenient and quick train journey from Brussels, which took just under an hour. Note that there are two train services—one taking less than an hour and a commuter service which takes longer. Make sure you select the faster option.

Trains depart regularly from Brussels but if you have come here by Eurostar chances are you’ll probably use Brussels South (Midi) station and arrive directly in Bruges, making this an ideal day trip.

When planning your visit, avoid arriving earlier than 9 am, as we noticed hardly anything was open, including cafés in Market Square. Equally, we suggest you plan a return train after 5 pm but no later than 6 pm, as most places close by then.

Travelling Around Bruges

Bruges is best explored on foot or by bicycle, given its compact size and pedestrian-friendly streets. Bicycles can be easily rented from several spots around the city, but we found walking sufficient for our day trip.

Initially, we thought the old city was far from the train station and considered taking a bus. However, we realised later it’s a pleasant 15-20 minute walk through the beautiful Minnewater Park, and we highly recommend this scenic route.

Best Time to Visit Bruges

Bruges is delightful year-round, but we particularly enjoyed visiting in spring when the weather was mild, and the city blossomed with flowers. Avoid peak summer months if you prefer fewer crowds, as Bruges attracts many tourists during July and August.

We visited in April, which was splendid. Minnewater Park was especially beautiful with blossoming flowers and vibrant colours.

Our Top Things to Do in Bruges

We got the Bruges City Card which included most of the attractions in this guide which we suggest you also consider if you plan on doing most of these places.

The card is valid for 72 hours and includes free entry to world-class museums and sights, including the Belfry, Groeninge Museum, City Hall, and the Church of Our Lady.

1. Glide Through Bruges on a Canal Boat Trip

Taking a boat trip on Bruges’ canals is essential, offering picturesque views and a unique perspective of the city’s historic buildings and bridges. Boats depart from various locations around the canals, with most operators providing similar experiences.

We enjoyed the charismatic commentary provided by our guide, who was very knowledgeable about the city’s landmarks.

The tour lasts about an hour, visiting major sights along the canals. We suggest starting your day with this tour to get an overview explained through the eyes of a local.

2. Admire the Church of Our Lady’s Towering Beauty

Visit the stunning Church of Our Lady, renowned for housing Michelangelo’s remarkable marble sculpture, “Madonna and Child.”

The church interior is modest yet impressive and wasn’t overly crowded during our visit.

3. Stroll Across the Charming Boniface Bridge (Bonifaciusbrug)

This quaint bridge offers romantic views and is a favourite photography spot. It’s said to be the beginning site of many Bruges romances.

4. Capture Iconic Views from Rosary Quay

Rosary Quay is ideal for capturing memorable photos of Bruges’ skyline, especially stunning during sunset. After our boat trip, we spent a leisurely 20-30 minutes here, soaking in the atmosphere and watching passing boats.

5. Discover Sacred History at Basilica of the Holy Blood

This fascinating basilica houses a relic believed to contain the blood of Christ. To find it easily, head to the right of City Hall and climb the stairs. The basilica’s vibrant interior reminded us of Budapest’s Matthias Church. It’s well worth a thoughtful visit.

6. Step Back in Time at Bruges City Hall

Built between 1376 and 1421, Bruges City Hall showcases stunning Flemish Gothic architecture, including intricate façades, towering spires, and ornate details.

Inside, the impressive Gothic Hall features vaulted ceilings, detailed murals depicting Bruges’ history, and a grand fireplace. Historically used for civic ceremonies, this hall is a proud symbol of Bruges’ heritage.

7. Wander Around De Burg Square

This vibrant historic square is filled with stunning architecture and includes City Hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood.

8. Experience the Bustling Market Square

Market Square is perfect for people-watching, souvenir shopping, or sampling local treats. Arriving at 8:30 am, we found few cafés open, but enjoyed a leisurely coffee at one of the open spots.

The square becomes lively throughout the day, and during our visit, a local fair enhanced the vibrant atmosphere.

For panoramic views consider the following spots:

• Belfort Tower (requires advance booking)
• Historium Bruges terrace
• Provincial Palace (free entry, a hidden gem)

9. Climb the Belfort for Panoramic Views

Climbing Belfry’s 366 steps is rewarding but requires good fitness. Unlike Rothenburg ob der Tauber’s Town Hall Tower, Belfort offers limited viewing angles due to mesh wiring, slightly obstructing photos.

One other thing to remember is that this attraction requires booking in advance. You can do this when you buy the tickets online or at the ticket desk if you have the Bruges City Card.

10. Marvel at Sint-Salvatorskathedraal

Visit Bruges’ oldest parish church, renowned for its art and architecture. During our visit, the church commemorated the late Pope Francis, adding a solemn atmosphere.

11. Relax at Scenic Minnewater Park

Minnewater Park, with its “Lake of Love,” offers a pleasant walk back to the station. We regretted not taking this route earlier. The park also features lakeside restaurants ideal for relaxing meals.

12. Explore the Majestic Provincial Palace

Admire the neo-Gothic elegance of the Provincial Palace. Entry is free, and the interior is charming—a hidden gem we stumbled upon unexpectedly.

13. Delve into History at Saint John’s Hospital

Now a museum, Saint John’s Hospital showcases historical medical artefacts. Although it includes interesting exhibits such as patient beds and operating tables, we found it somewhat underwhelming considering its significance as a medieval hospital for the poor.

That, and combined with the realistic pig faced human patients exhibition which felt painfully uncomfortable marked the abrupt end of our visit.

14. See Flemish art at Groeningemuseum

If time allows and if you have the Bruges City Card, pop into the Groeningemuseum (free with the Bruges Card) to see some Flemish art.

Tucked along the tranquil Dijver canal, it presents six centuries of Flemish and Belgian art, with masterpieces by Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Gerard David, Bosch and more.

1. FritBar – Bruges

FritBar is famous for authentic Belgian fries with delicious toppings. Despite the queue, service was swift.

We enjoyed fries with Bruges beer stew, cheese sauce, and cheese croquettes, accompanied by a recommended local IPA.

2. House of Waffles

No Bruges trip is complete without Belgian waffles. House of Waffles is a great place to visit.

We enjoyed Brussels-style waffles with chocolate sauce and Liege waffles with ice cream. Friendly service and humorous décor added to our enjoyment.

Final Thoughts

Our day trip to Bruges was relaxing and enriching. Although we departed around 6 pm when most attractions closed, we felt we had captured the essence of this charming medieval city.

Bruges undoubtedly deserves a spot on any European itinerary.
